When we started our event planning business a few years back, we wanted a name for our new biz that conveyed to the Jewish community who we are and what we could bring to the table. Not your typical, same old mitzvahs, but mitzvahs with a fresh modern approach, using our creativity and love for party planning along with the most up-to-date techniques, ideas and vendors. We decided the name “Modern Mitzvahs” would be the perfect fit.

No doubt these last few months have been very hard on all of us. There have been so many of life’s special moments postponed or cancelled including Bar & Bat Mitzvahs. Whether you were planning a mitzvah in Israel or working with your local synagogue, moving forward as initially planned can be tough. For a Jewish tween who has spent the greater part of the last year studying Hebrew, learning prayers and Torah portions, the idea of having to postpone their special day can be very emotional for them as well. As you know, getting ready for a Bar or Bat Mitzvah is no easy task.

We feel our modern approach to Mitzvah planning is especially useful during these times.
The recent trend of the drive-by graduation and birthday parties have really brought a little fun back to life and we have been amazed at all the creativity. So why not try a similar approach to Bar and Bat Mitzvahs?

One of our clients had been planning a July Bat Mitzvah in Israel followed by a celebration at home in August. Plans quickly evolved and the event was converted into a backyard Zoom Mitzvah service followed by a Micro Mitzvah Party. It turned out to be an excellent way to pivot under the circumstances. Immediate family and a few friends attended and additional family and friends from different parts of the country were able to watch a beautiful service with joy as the entire service was streamed live.

This Zoom Micro Mitzvah is just one example of the many options out there. How about a backyard movie night celebration or a field day? As purveyors of the Modern Mitzvah, we are here to help you create a special, memorable event for you, your family and close friends.

Contact us today for a complimentary consultation to find out modern ways we can help you plan your event!

Under the current circumstances we are all facing with the coronavirus, the impact of social distancing has changed our everyday lives. Restrictions are under constant review and seem to be changing daily. Due to these changes, there is a strong possibility your event will need to be postponed.

As disappointed as you may be feeling about having to reschedule your event, we are hopeful that your event will take place sooner than later. In the meantime, here a few things to consider when postponing your Bar or Bat Mitzvah celebration.

Finding a new date

There are a lot of factors to think about when deciding on a new date. Depending on the type of service your son or daughter will be having could determine when to reschedule. Most importantly, you will need to check with your synagogue or rabbi to find out what dates are available. How about your guests? Will you be expecting guests that will be traveling from out of town? How will this new date effect them? Would you be open to other days of the week to hold your event? When thinking about your options, our recommendation is not to get attached to any certain date but have an idea of a general time frame and go from there. Your decision to find a new date will impact not just who will be able to attend but whether the venue and additional vendors you have hired will be available.

Informing your vendors

Most likely the venue you have chosen and any other vendors you have hired will be expecting that your event will need to be postponed. However, it is a good idea to look over your contracts to determine what scenarios are covered and what your vendor’s polices are regarding postponement. Our experience is that everyone in the events industry is doing what they can to support their clients and understand that rescheduling is far better than cancelling.

What about your guests?

Once a new date has been scheduled you will want to inform your guests, especially anyone who may be traveling from out of town. We are optimistic that rescheduled events will take place with new restricted guidelines. To make things easier regarding updates, etc. it might be a good idea to correspond via email and hold off on the save the date cards.

These are just a few tips to help get you started. Keep in mind that a planner can be brought on at any stage of the planning process and can help with all the logistics involved with postponing your event. Contact us for a complimentary consultation.
